Provides 24 hour urgent and emergency psychiatric assessment for people of all ages. A mobile service is available. Referrals can be made by any member of the public, i.e. self-referrals, family, friends, GPs or community agencies.

Mental Health - Hillmorton Hospital

Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Service

The Acute Service is a 24-hour service providing for the acute psychiatric needs of the adult population (aged between 18 and 65 years). The service is provided on an inpatient basis, and comprises of individual clinical assessment and treatment delivered in a range of programmes, including intensive care, acute care and acute adolescent care.

Youth Specialty Services

A specialist outpatient service for 13 – 18 year olds (or older if still at school) with moderate to severe mental illness, and their families. Consultation services are provided for primary care, education and welfare services, and other community agencies who work with youth. The service can also access a Youth Day programme and a respite facility.

Regional Forensic Psychiatric Service

This service provides for those people within Canterbury, West Coast and Nelson/Marlborough districts identified as requiring forensic services. Forensic psychiatric care is provided to people who are referred to Healthlink South as a result of suspected or an established diagnosis of mental disorder. This service offers both inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment.

Alcohol and Drug Detox Unit

The Alcohol and Drug Service focuses on prevention and reduction of alcohol and other drug misuse, and the treatment and care of people suffering the effects of alcohol and drug misuse. The service provides screening and early intervention, assessment and treatment, referral to other Alcohol and Drug Services, health education and health promotion to individuals, significant others and small groups. A 6-bed inpatient unit provides specialist medical detoxification and stabilisation from alcohol and other drugs for those affected by alcohol and drug misuse.

Psychiatric Service for Adults with an Intellectual Disability (PSAID)

The Intellectually Disabled Persons’ Health Service is provided under Mental Health Management. It involves Psychiatric Service for Adults with an Intellectual Disability (PSAID). This service provides a 15-bed inpatient unit, day hospital programme, outpatient work and community housing.

Rehabilitation Service

This service provides extended care for people who have been assessed as having a significant disability arising from an established diagnosis of psychiatric illness, and who require ongoing intensive support.

As part of the redevelopment project, some of these services will have shifted by April 2001.
