The Burwood Surgical Service is a centre of excellence dedicated primarily to Elective Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation.
This service encompasses the patient journey whether from the acute phase at Christchurch Hospital or from the pre-admission phase of elective surgery through to discharge.
The Surgical Service comprises of:
Orthopaedic Outpatients Department (OOPD)
Admitting Unit (AU)
Operating Suite
Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU)
Sterilising Unit
Special Care Unit (SCU)
Surgical Orthopaedic Unit (SOU)
Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Unit (ORU)
The Surgical Service utilises a Multi-disciplinary Team approach including Medical, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Ranga Hauora Maori Health, Social Work, Pharmacy and Dietetic services as required.
The Surgical Service has recently undergone a series of staged re-developments of the surgical facility, now hosting state of the art equipment and facilities that would rival any private hospital.
Burwood now has a new operating suite housing 4 new theatres, an admitting Unit and a 1st and 2nd stage PACU.
It also has a new 30 bed Surgical Unit and a 12 bed Special Care Unit.
The Surgical Service provides a supportive environment to both staff members and patients.
Following a recent change in the Model of Care our service now provides a structured approach to educational development opportunities.
It also provides an in-depth orientation period for new staff joining our service.
